The Word: Reality Before Interpretation
How the Word can be understood as the underlying intelligible structure of reality rather than merely spoken language.
Abstract
This essay develops John 1 as a claim about reality preceding interpretation. Alignment Theory reads Logos as underlying intelligible structure rather than merely spoken language, making the passage central to the framework's account of truth and distortion.
Reality Comes First
John 1 places the Word before human naming, culture, and symbolic overlay. All things are made through the Word. Light shines in darkness before darkness understands it. This sequence matters because it means intelligible reality is not a human invention. Interpretation is downstream from structure.
That is one of the deepest claims in the entire framework. Truth is discovered more than invented because reality has an order not generated by our preferences, ideologies, or institutions. Human beings may ignore that order, distort it, or layer over it, but they do not create it from nothing.
Logos And Deep Coherence
Alignment Theory treats Logos as a way of naming deep coherence. The world is not random material waiting for narrative to give it shape. Rather, narrative itself becomes either more truthful or more false depending on its relation to the structure already there. This is why the framework keeps insisting on real reality before inherited overlay.
People live inside symbolic realities. Those symbolic systems matter. But they are not final. Some of them clarify the real; some of them obscure it. Awakening, in this sense, is not invention of a personal truth. It is recontact with what was true prior to our distortion.
Why Interpretation Can Drift
Once reality is understood as prior, distortion becomes intelligible. Humans can build workable stories that drift from actual structure. Institutions can stabilize those stories. Whole cultures can live inside managed overlays. This does not abolish reality. It postpones reckoning with it.
That is why John 1 is metaphysically central to Alignment Theory. It grounds the claim that truth is not merely negotiation. It is relation to underlying order.
